COVKARTSPORT . . .

The Established Low-Cost Steppingstone Into Motorsport Founded In 1996

The following regulations are in the process of being updated, the new updated version is gradually being incorporated below.

As the up-to-date version was lost following a website fault much hard work still needs to be done updating this older back-up version of the regulations. Most of the following regulations still apply but you should look for latest parts on the "Home" page, the "News" section and the "Dates" section of this website as these new additions are now in force!

Our "Code of Conduct" (printed below) remains unaltered!

It should be noted that Covkartsport will only take disciplinary action in the case of incidents (on or off track) that have been directly witnessed by officials or incidents where at least two independent witnesses can shed light upon what happened and agree that one particular party was at fault.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS:

1. Your yellow/blue COVKARTSPORT Racing Licence is appropriate for all COVKARTSPORT-organised events and you are required to produce it to our Scorekeepers when you sign-in at all COVKARTSPORT events. It must be signed or it is invalid!

1(a). Your signature (upon our Licence) either as a competitor or as parent or guardian of a competitor under the age of 18 years indicates your total agreement and acceptance of our regulations and your agreement to abide by our regulations and the decisions of the organisers.

2. You must present your signed Licence to our scorekeepers when you sign-in at the start of every event. Failure to produce this Licence will result in the deduction of your 3 Championship attendance points and you must purchase and sign a replacement Licence before you can race.

3. Please ensure that you bring your Licence to every event organised by COVKARTSPORT. It is proof that you are a current racing member of the COVKARTSPORT Championship and it greatly helps our scorekeepers in their duties.

4. The COVKARTSPORT Licence is not appropriate for MSA/ABkC-organised events for which an MSA Competition Licence should be obtained.

5. All "Matters arising", at a COVKARTSPORT racing event, will be decided upon by at least two members of our "Race-Day" Committee which will be comprised of the President and the Vice-Presidents of COVKARTSPORT.

WARNING:
5(a). CAUTION: All motorsport, which includes kart racing and practicing, can be dangerous - serious accidents are very rare but they can happen! Everyone who attends at a COVKARTSPORT event does so entirely at their own risk whether they be competitors, officials, circuit-employees, organisers, spectators or guests.

(b). All COVKARTSPORT members are required to bring all aspects of this section to the attention of any guests that they may bring with them.

(c). Members are reminded that they are completely RESPONSIBLE for the conduct/actions of any persons that they may invite to, or bring with them to a COVKARTSPORT event.

6(a). Spectators are reminded that they must remain behind safety barriers at all times.

(b). Any person walking in the pit-lane must take extreme care and be aware that karts may be arriving/exiting the pit area.

7. Only the drivers, in that particular race, and authorised personnel are allowed onto the circuit.

8. COVKARTSPORT and/or the circuit cannot accept liability for any accident or loss howsoever caused - this also applies to damage to private and commercial vehicles and theft or damage to property and personal effects - please ensure that all involved are aware.

9.
WE STRONGLY ADVISE ALL COMPETITORS TO READ AND ADHERE TO ALL OF THE REGULATIONS.  Thank you.

10. This warning/advice applies to both “The COVKARTSPORT Championship”, "The COVKARTSPORT Winter Series" and to our members when they are attending/driving/racing as a result of winning the sponsored drive (COVKARTSPORT President’s Award) and also to practicing, testing and winning test-drives (or paid-for drives) in gearbox karts or in single-seater racing cars.

11. It is the responsibility of the DRIVER (you), before driving any racing machine, to run through a safety check before every session in that vehicle and be satisfied that the vehicle is safe to drive with no obvious defects. The driver (YOU) must  always be satisfied that the vehicle can function safely! If not - you MUST decline to drive it!

Aims & Code of Conduct:
1: COVKARTSPORT exists to provide both novice and experienced racers with a proficient standard of competitive outdoor all-weather motor (kart) racing at the lowest possible cost in a friendly, supportive and family-orientated atmosphere.

2. The principles of Fairness and Common Sense will be applied to all matters arising - and to each and every member.

3: Good race-driving skills will be encouraged at all times and high standards of etiquette are demanded of all members both on and off the circuit.

4: COVKARTSPORT will encourage novice drivers to both develop their kart-control skills and their understanding of race-craft.

5: COVKARTSPORT will provide a credible stepping-stone for members who wish to progress into higher forms of motor sport and will encourage or advise those members if required. We will always endeavour to help/support/advise any member seeking advice on any kart-related issue as many of the senior members of COVKARTSPORT have long experience of owner-driver motorsport, MSA Licencing procedures and MSA regulations as well as issues relating directly to our own Championship.

6: COVKARTSPORT will not tolerate any form of verbal or physical abuse.

7: We all attend COVKARTSPORT events because we enjoy motor racing/kart racing. We must always remember this - even when passions run high - for this is when we must show the strength of character to conduct ourselves with good grace! Any person conducting themselves in a dangerous, abusive or offensive way (in breach of  Sections 3, 6 or 8) will be given just one warning if the incident is isolated and not too serious or, if the incident is repeated or serious their membership of COVKARTSPORT will be revoked with no refund or right of appeal.

8: COVKARTSPORT will never advocate, employ or tolerate any policies/behaviour  which could be perceived as being racially or sexually discriminatory.

9: We expect you all to contribute positively to the good spirit which exists within the COVKARTSPORT  membership by supporting and helping your fellow members and by acting as good ambassadors for COVKARTSPORT.

10: All members, as a condition of membership of COVKARTSPORT, must agree to abide by our regulations and uphold these Aims & Code of Conduct.  Your signature, on your COVKARTSPORT Racing Licence, signifies your acceptance. Thank you.

These rules & regulations have constantly evolved as we have worked continually to improve Covkartsport since 1996. They have been put into place so that all of our members can enjoy a fairly run Championship at the lowest possible cost!

1: CLARIFICATIONS & COMPLAINTS:
(a) Any contingency/eventuality not covered within this Handbook will be decided, after due consideration, by the President and/or Vice-Presidents of Covkartsport.
(b) Any required clarification will be made by either the President or one of the Vice-Presidents of Covkartsport and published on www.covkartsport.com
(c) Such publication will take place before the next round of the Covkartsport Championship and can be regarded as an addition to these regulations.
(d) Any/all complaints concerning the Covkartsport Championship and/or the karts should be made to the Covkartsport President or Vice-Presidents and NOT to members of staff employed by the circuit at which a Covkartsport event is taking place AND STRICTLY NOT TO OUR SCOREKEEPERS  please see (Section 13).

2: ABOUT THE CHAMPIONSHIP:
(a) This Championship will be called the “Covkartsport Championship”.
(b) It will take place on the best outdoor kart racing circuits available within the budget of Covkartsport and its members and within a radius of 150 miles of Coventry.
(c) It will take place on a minimum of 3 different circuits, within one season, and a maximum of 7 circuits.
(d) It will always take place on a Sunday and every member is required to sign-in BEFORE 9.30am.
(e) This will be an “ALL-WEATHER” Championship.
(f) It will be run on well maintained fleets of 4-stroke hire karts, provided by each individual circuit, which are suitable for good racing on that particular circuit. Usually Honda twin-engine pro-karts or single-engine Thunderkarts.
(g) It should always be borne in mind that it is NEVER possible for a circuit to maintain a fleet of commercial karts so that each kart gives exact parity in performance. It is just not possible as there are far too many variable factors. We accept this. However, the organisers of Covkartsport must be satisfied that the Circuit’s maintenance of the fleet of karts meets the requirements of both the “Sale of Goods & Services” Act and the relevant Health & Safety Acts.  We reserve the right to take the appropriate action should the Circuit not meet the provisions of these Acts.
(h) Race-suits, helmets and gloves will be provided, by the circuit, to every driver who does not have their own.
(i) There will be a minimum of 5 rounds and a maximum of 7 rounds.
(j) Each round will consist of a minimum of 3 laps (not racing) practice followed by 3 races of equal points for every driver.
(k) Races will be “Sprint Races” and may vary in length, depending upon weather conditions and track length, from between 5 to 10 laps.
(l) The organisers of Covkartsport will provide a GRID-SCHEDULE for racing in order that every driver taking part, subject to them not starting from the back of the grid for disciplinary reasons, will have a balance of grid positions to +/- 1 place with every other driver taking part. That is to say that if a driver adds up the sum total of his/her grid places in all 3 races it will only vary by a factor of 1 per the entire event. Which amounts to 1/3 of a single grid position (advantage or disadvantage) per race. THIS IS THE FAIREST SYSTEM POSSIBLE!
(m) The order in which a driver signs-in will dictate their grid positions throughout the event. Eg: If you are driver number 4 to sign-in, in your class, then you will be in grid place No.4 in your first race. If it is a 20-kart race then you will be in roughly grid place No.16 and grid place No.10 in your other two races. If you have a front-row start in one of your races you can be sure that this will be balanced by a mid position start and a back-row start! Our scorekeepers will NOT allow you to choose your signing-in number and, if they think that you are deliberately trying to sign-in to get a particular number, they will randomly change your number anyway! The system MUST be random and show no favour to any driver! This is the system which we have used since 1999 and it works very well indeed!
(n) The grid schedule must enable drivers to start their races in one race from near the front of the grid, one race from near the middle of the grid and one race from near the back of the grid. Very rarely some drivers may experience 3 starts which could all be described as relatively mid grid. This is not a mistake and is occasionally necessary to ensure the mathematics of achieving our standard of balanced and fair grid positions.
(o) No driver will race in the same kart more than twice with most drivers having a different kart for every race.
(p) The Covkartsport “Grid-Marshall” will tell you which races you are in and will call out the names in good time for you to get kitted-up and ready to race. HE WILL NOT COME AND LOOK FOR YOU! You have the responsibility to ensure that you get into your kart at the right time to race. If you are late you may have to start from the pit lane or you may forfeit your race altogether! You are NOT allowed to ask the Covkartsport Scorekeepers which race you are in.
(q) Race-starts will usually be made, by the dropping of a National or Green flag or red electronic lights being switched off, from a standing position on a diagonally staggered grid.
(r) Rolling starts will only be made, as a safety measure, if our drivers are having difficulty avoiding contact through the first two bends or if it is thought that, due to the design of the track and the prevailing weather conditions, it would be dangerous to have standing starts.
(s) If a rolling start is made - the karts must formate as closely as they can on the parade lap at approximately 50% of full speed. It is up to all drivers to keep up with the kart in front. Large gaps should NOT be allowed to develop. However NO overtaking is allowed until the start signal has been given and you have crossed the starting line. Drivers not adhering to these rules will be penalised!
(t) Drivers overtaking before the start line will be normally forfeit 1 point for every driver that they overtook and then risk disqualification if they repeat this offence at the same event.
(u) IF YOU DISCOVER A FAULT ON THE KART YOU MUST REPORT IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO ONE OF THE ORGANISERS OF COVKARTSPORT.
(v) IF YOU DISCOVER A SERIOUS FAULT BEFORE THE RACE HAS STARTED PUT YOUR ARM STRAIGHT ABOVE YOUR HEAD AND WAVE. A marshall should then come to you and either rectify the fault or replace the kart.
(w) If a twin engine kart goes onto one engine during practice or a race it may be advantageous for you to come back into the pits for remedial action - this is your choice!
(x) The Organisers of Covkartsport want to know if karts are breaking down for reasons of poor mechanical preparation. All members should make sure that a breakdown is logged with us!
(y) If a driver experiences a breakdown during a race, and the kart cannot be re-started, then that race is over for that driver. For logistical reasons drivers can only be allowed to take part in the races in which they are scheduled to compete.
(z) Drivers stopping after spinning/skidding/crashing/breaking down, on the circuit or the run-off areas MUST APPLY THEIR BRAKE until they have stopped moving and then stay in their kart until they are very sure that it is safe to get out. Either pull the kart into a position of safety (if it is terminally damaged) and get yourself BEHIND the nearest safety barrier or pull it well away from the racing line and try to re-start it. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANES ATTEMPT TO RE-JOIN THE RACE UNTIL IT IS SAFE TO DO SO! Please remember that any position on the outside of a bend is potentially very dangerous - particularly in wet or greasy conditions!
(z.2) If your race is over stay in one safe position until the end of the race (you can even remain seated in your kart if it is off the track and well away from any danger area) - do NOT run about on the circuit!
(a.a) Races will only be re-run in the event of a red flag being shown before one lap has been completed. After one lap a full result will be declared based on the positions of the karts as they last passed over the finishing line.
(a.a.2) Drivers whose karts are permanently disabled, when a first lap red flag is shown, will NOT take the re-start. Only the karts still running, after the red flag and those capable of being re-started will actually take the re-start.
(b.b) Circuits must provide clean toilet and washing facilities.
(c.c) By law a basic insurance must be provided by each individual circuit. It should be noted that this is NOT a comprehensive “All-risks” insurance but a very basic insurance which will only entertain claims where negligence can be proven against the Circuit.
(d.d) Every circuit has a duty to supply Covkartsport, and its members, with the specified service for which we have contracted in accordance with the provisions of both the “Supply of Goods and Services Act” and the relevant Health & Safety Acts.
(e.e) The organisers, at their discretion, may declare any round of the Covkartsport Championship as “Null & Void” if the above requirements are not met.
(ff) The “Organisers” are the President and the Vice-Presidents of Covkartsport.
(g.g) A round of the Championship may be cancelled, at any time - even during an event, if it is thought that safety is being compromised or that we are not being provided with the contracted/specified service.
(h.h) A round of the Championship may also be halted or cancelled, at short notice or no notice at all, due to unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances. No persons involved with Covkartsport will be eligible for any compensation, from Covkartsport, under these (or any other) circumstances.
(i.i) The Covkartsport Championship is an all-weather Championship and will continue in adverse weather conditions until such time as the Circuit Race Director (an employee of the circuit) declares a cessation of racing on the grounds that to continue would be unsafe. This may be after we have all arrived at the circuit but before racing has started. This is unfortunate but we must accept this on safety grounds.
(j.j) Under these circumstances Covkartsport  will not make refunds to its members if fees have already been paid to the circuit  but will, instead, take all necessary action to recover compensation which, if successful, will be paid proportionately to each member who arrived to take part.
(k.k) Unfortunately Covkartsport cannot entertain compensation claims for the recovery of travelling and accommodation expenses or for consequential loss caused by a member attending at a Covkartsport event which, for any reason, had to be cancelled or declared “Null and Void”.
(l.l) The ultimate authority over circuit-related matters, at any round of the Covkartsport Championship, is the circuit-employed Race Director. The organisers of Covkartsport are ultimately bound by decisions of this Race Director.
(m.m) The Covkartsport organisers will make all decisions relating to the regulations of Covkartsport but we can only make recommendations to the circuit staff concerning the running of our event and regulations of that particular circuit.
(n.n) Covkartsport will, in December of each year hold a family-orientated Dinner & Awards Presentations Evening which will be the celebration of the season and the Final Covkartsport event of the year.
(n.n.1) At this dinner the President of Covkartsport or one of the Vice-Presidents will present the Annual Report and this will be published, upon our website before the 31st January of the following year.
(o.o) The full Covkartsport Calendar of events (all of the rounds and details of the Covkartsport Championship) will always be published by the 21st January of each year. There will never be kart racing in the months of August or December.
(o.o.1) Covkartsport reserves the right, at any time, to alter/change our published calendar of events due to unforeseen circumstances.
(p.p) Every year a pre-season get together and practice day will be organised at the circuit we consider is best to place new outdoor racers for their first drive. This will normally be held in March each year and is the ideal opportunity to introduce our new members to the “Covkartsport way of karting”. This will give members the opportunity to have 2 or 3 practice sessions on the track with tuition if they ask for it. There will be no racing at this event.
(q.q) Covkartsport may, from time to time, enter representative drivers or teams into other forms of karting competition not organised by Covkartsport.
(r.r) It is the responsibility of any member, who invites guest drivers or spectators, to make them aware of all pertinent regulations.

3: ELIGIBILITY TO JOIN, MEDICATION & DRUGS, LICENCE/HANDBOOK
         AND PERMISSION TO RACE:
(a) This Championship will be open to any person, in reasonable health and complying with the minimum age requirement, who pays the required annual membership fee and completes and signs the Membership Application Form provided that they are not the subject of any existing ban and that there are still places available, in their class, within the Covkartsport Championship.
(b) The organisers of Covkartsport reserve the right to refuse membership to any prospective member, or renewing member, if it is thought that the individual would be detrimental  to the interests of Covkartsport.
(c) We very much regret that our circuits do not offer karts suitable for disabled persons to compete in the Covkartsport Championship although Glan-y-gors Park Circuit have pioneered a fleet of off-road karts specifically for disabled persons.
(d) If no places are available in the Covkartsport Championship, because maximum numbers have been attained, we may take up to 3 extra members as “Reserves” in each of our classes. After that a waiting list will be created. Both “Reserves” and persons on the waiting list will be given priority in accordance with the dates that they made their applications: eg. First-come-first-served!
(e) “Reasonable Health” will mean not knowingly having any medical/mental condition which would, or could, place that member or other persons at risk when driving/racing a kart.
(f) We further demand that all members, who are taking prescribed drugs, ensure that the particular prescribed drug does not affect or impair their performance whilst driving/racing and that they do not race if the drug/medication could cause a problem.
(g) The taking of recreational drugs or the consumption of alcohol is expressly forbidden if taken on the same day as the Covkartsport event and before that driver has completed their races. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RACE WITH THESE SUBSTANCES IN YOUR BLOODSTREAM!
(h) At each Covkartsport event every member, who wishes to race, must report to the Covkartsport Scorekeepers and sign-on paying the required race-day fee, before 9.30am.
(i) Competitors must produce their Covkartsport Licence and show the signed front cover to the Covkartsport Scorekeeper when they sign-in at every event.
(j) Every member must sign their name in the appropriate space on the front of their Covkartsport Licence. This signifies their total acceptance of everything contained within the Covkartsport Licence/Handbook.
(j.1) Competitors attempting to sign-in without producing a signed Covkartsport Licence will not receive their 5 attendance points and may not race at all if we have not previously seen that their Licence had been signed.
(j.2) Members, who have lost their Covkartsport Licence may, upon payment of a £10 fee, purchase and sign a replacement Licence on the spot. They will then receive their 5 attendance points.
(j.3) Guest drivers may only race on the understanding that the member who has brought them has signed for them as well and that the particular Covkartsport member has made the guest aware of all of the pertinent regulations and that the guest only races on the express acceptance of these regulations.
(k) Competitors, on their way to the circuit, who know that they are going to be late for signing-in should contact us on one of our mobile ’phones:
    07931-938740 (Nick Stanley) or
    07920-445862 (Stuart Lindsay) or
    07801-235851 (Peter Realf) all before 9.30am
to tell us that they are definitely going to be there soon and their anticipated time of arrival. These drivers will not be excluded. We will then pencil their name onto the signing-on sheet and into the grid schedules. No penalty will be given.
(l) Competitors arriving after 9.30am who have not ’phoned to state that they will be late will not be given their 5 Championship attendance points and will be required to start every race from the back of the grid or from the pit lane.
(m) Any competitor arriving after the final practice (in their class) has commenced will not be allowed to take part at that round. The first practice session is for Juniors at approximately 10.00am. The last practice session (Senior Heavyweight) is usually on circuit by approximately 11.00am.
(n) The driver/member must always conduct themselves in accordance with the published “Covkartsport Aims & Code of Conduct”.
(o) IT IS NOT COMPULSORY FOR EVERY DRIVER TO TAKE PART AT EVERY ROUND! However, we expect each member to support us by turning out in as many rounds as they can. We operate a passive system for race-days as we assume that each member will be taking part! DO NOT TELL US IF YOU CAN COME but if you cannot attend YOU ARE REQUIRED to notify us by Email or ‘phone call in order that we can try to encourage “Guest” drivers to take your place. Please give us as much notice as you can. No penalties will be imposed upon any member adhering to this rule. Any driver failing to notify us will have 5 Championship points deducted from their total.
(o.1) In cases of genuine emergency or illness rule 3:(o) will not apply.
(p) Any member in breach of sub-sections (m) and (o) above may be required to pay 50% of that particular race-day fee, as a penalty to Covkartsport, even though they have not raced. This fee will have to be paid before the driver is allowed to take part in another round of the Covkartsport Championship.

4: PENALTIES AS A RESULT OF RACING INCIDENTS:
(a) Our aim is to encourage good race techniques and improve poor race driving to a standard where our competitors can trust each other when racing wheel-to-wheel at speed. Deliberate acts of bad driving (where witnessed) will not be tolerated.
Kart-to-kart contact must be kept to a minimum and drivers will be called back to the pits for advice if they are continually spinning or driving off the circuit. We are not afraid to impose penalties and, whilst we do not wish to spoil your racing, we believe that appropriate penalties can often help to improve racing standards!
(b) Deliberate bumping and weaving/swerving about so as to disadvantage other drivers will at first result in a warning board. If this warning is ignored a black flag will be shown and the driver must return to the pits for a stop-and-go penalty. DO NOT SPEED IN THE PIT LANE OR ANOTHER PENALTY MAY ENSUE! The driver may be held for some time if the matter needs to be explained to them. Calmly accept what the marshall has to say or he may recommend a more serious penalty!
(c) Serious incidents may result in disqualification from that race or even exclusion from the event or exclusion from the Championship.
(d) If a driver continues to accrue warning-boards disqualifications may still result or suspended disqualifications which may be carried over to the next event.
(e) IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT, IN ORDER FOR A PENALTY TO BE IMPOSED, AN INCIDENT MUST BE WITNESSED BY AT LEAST ONE OF THE COVKARTSPORT ORGANISERS AND/OR A CIRCUIT STAFF MEMBER OR 2 PEOPLE - ONE OF WHOM SHOULD NOT BE  A CLOSE RELATIVE OR FRIEND OF THE ALLEGED VICTIM. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO WAYS OF LOOKING AT A GENUINE RACING INCIDENT!
(e1) IF YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE UNFAIRLY DISADVANTAGED ANOTHER DRIVER, WHILST PASSING THEM, IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA TO RAISE YOUR ARM TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU ARE AT FAULT AND QUICKLY ALLOW THEM TO PASS YOU AGAIN. THIS WILL CERTAINLY MITIGATE ANY POSSIBLE PENALTY!
(f) Please be warned that, in the last race of the year (when drivers can sometimes be tempted to adopt an over-aggressive strategy), disqualifications (instead of warning boards) will almost certainly be immediately imposed if an unfair advantage is obtained!
(g) Black flags (not warning boards) will be automatically shown to drivers (if seen) who, having spun on the circuit, fail to apply their brake and roll backwards into the path of another kart - this is a bad one - don’t do it!!!!!
(h) Equally bad (and another instant black-flag offence) is the driver who rejoins the circuit, following a spin/off track excursion or rejoining from the pit lane, without looking to see that it was safe to do so or just recklessly rejoining so as to cause a hazard to other karts.
(i) Drivers involved in deliberate acts of dangerous blocking or retaliation will also be automatically black-flagged if seen!
(j) Drivers breaching sections (f), (g) and (h) above will not be allowed back onto the circuit (DISQUALIFIED) in that race!
(k) Drivers who ignore black flags and fail to come into the pits will be disqualified from that race which means no points from that race!
(l) Drivers who have already been disqualified from a race will forfeit all of their points from that event (including attendance points) if they receive a second disqualification at the same event!
(m) We trust that all of our members will do nothing to bring Covkartsport into disrepute for which the penalty is exclusion from Covkartsport. This would cover:
(m.2) Acts of physical violence or threats of violence made to another person/driver.
(m.3) Acts of verbal abuse/obscene diction used in a loud or threatening way. We should always remember that Covkartsport is a family club with some very young children and guests attending as spectators.
(o) Any penalised member may appeal against the penalty provided that:
(o.1) The appeal is made in writing, in which witnesses must be named (with contact telephone numbers), within 72 hours of the incident after which time has elapsed no appeal will be considered. There will be no charge for this process.
(o.2) Appeals will be considered by at least two nominated (unbiased) members of Covkartsport - the members to be nominated by the organisers.
(o.3) At appeal a penalty may be upheld, struck-out or increased!
(o.4) The result of an appeal will be final.
(o.5) One appeal only will be considered. No further appeals, regarding the same matter, will be considered.
(o.6) This appeal process may also be applied to, as a means of settling, any matter of controversy or dispute within Covkartsport.

5: CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS SCORING:
(a) Every member attending at a round of the Covkartsport Championship will, subject to their compliance with these regulations, score 1 attendance point per race which will be added to their Championship total.
(b) Regardless of how many karts start or finish a race - every race will be worth 20 points to the winner.
(c) Places are scored down by one-point increments throughout the order eg: 1st=20pts, 2nd=19pts, 3rd=18pts, 4th=17pts, 5th=16pts etc, etc.
(d) The driver finishing last in a race may score more than 1 point if there were less than 20 karts taking part. eg: If there were 12 karts in a race - the driver who came last would score 9 points!
(e) Where starting grids exceed 20 karts - those drivers finishing in 20th place or lower will all be awarded 1 Championship point each eg: 18th= 3pts, 19th= 2pts, 20th= 1pt, 21st= 1pt, 22nd=1pt etc, etc.
(f) Drivers not completing a race will still be placed and accorded Championship points. This will be calculated, by computer, on the basis that the first kart out of a race will be given the points for last place.
(g) The maximum points that any member can score at one round of the Covkartsport Championship is 65 points. The minimum score is 8 points unless attendance points are deducted or penalty point deductions are imposed.
(h) At the end of the season all of the drivers who have competed at every round of the Covkartsport Championship will have their 5 lowest scoring races removed from their total.
(h.2) Drivers who have not competed in EVERY round will not deduct any of their scores: All of their scores will be counted.
(i) The 5 attendance points will be retained from every round at which the driver attends - even the deducted score covered in 5(h) above.
(j) If a driver is disqualified from a race they score no points from that race.
(k) If a driver is disqualified from a complete round, but has attended at every round of the Championship, they may not count their disqualified round as being their lowest score. Their lowest other round will be deducted instead.
(l) A driver will not receive 3 attendance points for a round from which they are disqualified.

6: COVKARTSPORT CHAMPIONSHIP CLASSES:
(a) There will be one main JUNIOR class which is restricted to those members between the ages of 12 and 16 years old. Juniors must be 12 years old in the year in which they join.
(b) At the end of the season we may also make awards to the best JUNIOR INTERMEDIATE drivers who will be juniors who are over 65kgs in weight.
(c) Junior Intermediate awards will not be given to drivers who win one of the top  ordinary Junior Class awards.
(d) Junior drivers, at their own discretion, may opt to join the Senior Classes (at the start of the season) if they are 16 years old in that same year. Alternatively, they may wish to continue for one more season in the Junior Class if they have not attained their 16th birthday by the first round in which they race.
(e) ANY DRIVER, UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS (WHEN THEY JOIN) MUST HAVE THEIR MEMBERSHIP FORM ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY THEIR LEGAL PARENT OR GUARDIAN.
(f) ANY COVKARTSPORT DRIVER, UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS, MUST BE ACCOMPANIED (at every Covkartsport event) BY THEIR PARENT/S, GUARDIAN/S OR OTHER NOMINATED RESPONSIBLE ADULT/S  WHO IS/ARE WILLING TO COUNTER-SIGN THE REGISTER AT THE CIRCUIT AND MAINTAIN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT YOUNG PERSON.
(g) SENIOR LIGHTWEIGHTS will be aged 16 years, or above,  in the same season in which they join and must be UNDER the weight of 80kgs. (80kgs fails).
(h) SENIOR HEAVYWEIGHTS will be aged 16 years, or above, in the same season in which they join and must be OVER the weight of 79.99kgs. (80kgs passes).
(i) At the end of the season awards may also be made to “SUPER-HEAVYWEIGHTS” who will be the best drivers, not winning one of the top heavyweight awards, who are over 90kgs in weight (90kgs passes).
(j) Top Novice awards will be made in all of the 3 main classes.
(k) The 3 main classes will be strictly segregated into separate races.
(l) Junior drivers will never be allowed to race with/against Senior drivers in the Covkartsport Championship in order to satisfy the requirements of the circuits.
(m) Novice drivers will be drivers who are inexperienced in racing karts on outdoor circuits: a driver who has completed less than 6 outdoor karting events.
(n) It is at the discretion of the applicant to disclose if he/she is a Novice or an  experienced driver. We expect our members to be truthful.
(o) Novice drivers are only eligible to win the “Top Novice” awards. They cannot win any of the main class awards or the overall Covkartsport Championship Trophy. This is so that we can encourage genuine novices (who won’t win the top awards anyway) and discourage experienced racers from falsely stating that they are novices in order to try to win both the novice and top driver awards!
(p) Drivers are trusted to enter their correct weight class!
(q) Random weight checks will be carried out, during the season, to ensure that Senior Heavyweight drivers are in their correct class. Drivers will be weighed in their race suits and race boots - BUT NOT WITH THEIR CRASH HELMETS OR GLOVES!
(r) Any driver weighing-in at under 80kgs will be placed into the Senior Lightweight Class for the remainder of the season.
(r.1)They will be allowed to transfer all of their Championship points provided that they are not more than 2kgs underweight.
(r.2) If they are more than 2kgs underweight they will forfeit their total Championship points to date.
(r.3) No driver, having transferred from one class to another, can transfer back to the other class in the same season! Only one class-to-class transfer is permitted, for any one driver, per season!
(s) If a driver loses weight during a season and asks to be transferred to the Senior Lightweight class (before a random weight check has been notified to the membership) they may transfer with all of their Championship points intact and not be subject to any random weight checks.
(t) If a Senior Lightweight driver has exceeded 80kgs, during the course of a season and is sure that they are going to maintain an 80kg+ weight, they can ask to transfer (with their points) to the Senior Heavyweight class.
(t.1) However, if at a later random weight test they are under 80kgs - they will forfeit all of their Championship points though they may continue in the Heavyweight Class as a non-points-scoring driver.
(u) We do not weigh Senior Lightweight drivers at random weight checks as there is no advantage to be gained for a lightweight driver if they are too heavy for that class!

7: END-OF-SEASON AWARDS:
(a) In accordance with our published aim to encourage and be fair to all of our drivers the following awards will be presented at our end-of-season dinner:
(b) One trophy per every five drivers will be presented to both leading novice and leading experienced drivers (1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th etc).
(c) Large Challenge Trophies, which are the property of (and are returnable to) Covkartsport, will be presented to the winners of the main (experienced driver) classes in addition to the awards that they keep.
(d) A Challenge Silver Salver (returnable) will be presented to the driver who has been judged to have shown the MOST IMPROVEMENT during that year.
(f) Drivers declaring themselves to be Novices, when they join Covkartsport, will only be eligible to compete for the “Top Novice Driver Awards” in their first season.
(g) The overall “Covkartsport Championship Challenge Trophy” (returnable) will be presented to the competitor (experienced driver only) with the most points of all of the classes.
(h) The “President‘s Award/s“, “Special Awards” and “Lifetime Membership Awards” may be made to deserving candidates.
(i) “Merit” Awards will be presented to all of the non-award-winning drivers who supported Covkartsport at 6 or more rounds during that year.
(j) In the event of drivers having tied on equal numbers of points - their positions will be decided upon a count-back of highest number of wins. If still tied it then goes to highest number of 2nd places, then highest number of third places etc. etc. In the count-back the races from the “Dropped-score” round will NOT be counted. As this round was dropped  it no longer exists!

8: RENEWING YOUR MEMBERSHIP AND NEW MEMBERS:
(a) Existing membership should be renewed between 1st December and January 31st  to qualify for the £5 reduction and ensure a place in the new Championship.
(b) Existing membership places, in the Covkartsport Championship, will only be held until the 31st January each year. After that the membership is made “Open” on a “First-come-first-served-basis” and existing members cannot be guaranteed a place if we have not received their fully completed membership form and correct membership fee by first post on the 1st February.
(c) New members may apply to join the club at any time throughout the year. If no places are available a waiting list will be created.
(d) Members joining the Covkartsport Championship and racing in the second part of the season will be charged a membership fee which is 50% of the full fee for that year. They will then be treated as renewing members for the following season.
(e) Only one full membership fee will be payable per family until 31/11/2005. After that date every additional racing family member will be required to pay an annual membership fee of £5. “Family” member will mean immediate blood-line relatives or the partner of the member.
(f) Annual Membership fees (or part thereof) are, under no circumstances, refundable.
(g) Members may bring along “Guest” drivers to race with us -  subject to grid places being available.
(h) These guest drivers will be required to pay a “Guest Fee” which will be the same race-day fee that our members have paid plus £10.
(i) Spectators are very welcome to attend FREE OF CHARGE! - We like as many spectators to attend as possible!

(j) Guest drivers at our Annual "OPEN" Championship meeting will be required to pay a £15 additional fee.

(k) Membership of our main Covkartsport Championship will entitle the member to race in our Winter Series in the same calendar year.

(l) Any person may join Covkartsport just for the Winter Series only - but they will have to pay a Winter Series membership fee of £10.

(m) Guest drivers into the Winter Series will have to pay an additional fee of £5.

9: CHAMPIONSHIP RESERVE (R) MEMBERS:
It is only necessary for Covkartsport to have Championship Reserve Members if our membership numbers, in any one class, exceed our maximum quota  based on the maximum grid sizes at the particular circuits we have booked and provided that each class has no more than 3 races per cycle.
Reserve members help Covkartsport to maintain maximum grid sizes at each event. This helps us to negotiate lower race-day fees with the circuit which, in turn, are passed on to our members. It is not anticipated that any Reserve Member will be asked to stand down more than twice per season and it is hoped that they will all be able to take part in every round! Before the season starts we will be able to inform Reserve Members that they CAN definitely race at certain rounds of the Covkartsport Championship. Please ask!
(a) Before the first round of the Covkartsport Championship the last members to have renewed their membership or joined Covkartsport may, depending upon the total number of members enrolled in any one of the three main classes, be declared as Reserve members of the Championship and have the letter “R” after their name in the listings.
(b) There will not be more than 3 Reserve members in any one class after which membership will be closed and a waiting list created.
(c) Reserve Members will be included in the Championship table, have all of the rights of full Championship members and will compete in the Covkartsport Championship as a full member.
(d) The organisers of Covkartsport will do all that they can to ensure that Reserve Members race at every round of the Covkartsport Championship.
(e) Reserve members will be bound by all of the full Covkartsport Championship Regulations.
(f) Reserve members are expected to attend, as if they were ordinary Championship members, at every round of the Covkartsport Championship however, there is a very small possibility that they could be asked to stand down. That is the purpose of being a Reserve Championship Member.
(g) HOWEVER, THE ONLY REASON THAT A RESERVE MEMBER CAN BE ASKED TO STAND DOWN IS THAT EVERY MEMBER ABOVE THEM IN THE LISTINGS HAS ATTENDED AT THAT ROUND - WHICH WOULD RESULT IN THE RACES BEING FORCED INTO AN EXTRA MATHEMATICAL CYCLE. IN OTHER WORDS - NEEDING 3 ADDITIONAL RACES IN ANY PARTICULAR CLASS WHICH WOULD TAKE US BEYOND OUR ALLOTED TIME AT THAT PARTICULAR CIRCUIT.
(h) If Reserve Members are asked to stand down they will be given their 5 Championship attendance points and, at the end of the season, they will be awarded a score (for the round/s in which they were asked to stand down) based on the average number of points that they have scored in their other rounds thereby giving them a full and competitive Championship total points-score at the end of the season and giving them an equal chance of awards with full Championship members.
(i) Reserve Members, who are standing down at an event, will be encouraged to help the track observers at that event - if they wish to do so.
(i) If Reserve Members attend, and stand down, they will each be automatically paid the sum of £10 cash by Covkartsport on the day of that event provided that they have arrived and signed-in prior to the 9.30am deadline that applies to all members.
(j) If a reserve member is coming to an event but, during travelling they realise that they will not make the 9.30am deadline, they should telephone to inform us that they are going to arrive late in just the same way as our full members do (please see Regulation 3 sub-sections: (h), (i), (j) etc.
(k) If a full member withdraws permanently from the Covkartsport Championship the driver at the top of the Reserve list will take their place, their Reserve status will be removed and they automatically become a full member. A person on the waiting list will then be invited to join the Championship as last reserve member.

10: FLAG SIGNALS AND LIGHTS PLUS HAND SIGNALS:
(a) These advisory and warning signals must be obeyed at all times. THERE CAN NO ARGUMENT! IF YOU DID NOT SEE A SIGNAL - YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE - IF YOU WERE DRIVING WITH DUE CARE AND ATTENTION!
(b) At Covkartsport our circuits offer a very abridged series of signals in order to simplify the situation for less experienced racers. If you want to study the full list of racing signals you must obtain a current edition of the “MSA Competitors Yearbook”.
(c) NATIONAL FLAG - Dropping this starts the race.
(d) YELLOW FLAG/LIGHT - There is a danger on the track - NO OVERTAKING - slow off the racing pace and be prepared to stop or take avoiding action.
(e) GREEN FLAG/LIGHT - Track is all clear - you can race!
(f) RED FLAG/LIGHT - Race is stopped due to a very dangerous situation somewhere on the circuit - YOU MUST STOP RACING IMMEDIATELY, SLOW DOWN TO AN ABSOLUTE CRAWL AND RAISE YOUR ARM TO WARN OTHER DRIVERS. BE READY FOR  A TRACK MARSHALL TO GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS OR TELL YOU TO STOP WHERE YOU ARE! The race is finished as soon as you see the red flag or light! DO NOT CARRY ON RACING TO THE FINISHING LINE.
(f.2) The RED LIGHT going off is sometimes used (as in F1) to start our races.
(g) BLACK & WHITE (DIAGONAL HALVED) FLAG OR BOARD - This will only be shown at the start/finish line (with your number) to tell you that you must improve something which you are doing wrong! Carry on racing - you do not need to come into the pits!
(h) BLACK FLAG - Only shown at the start/finish line (with your number) - You have done something bad and you must come into the pits for a disqualification or a severe warning or a stop-go penalty. May sometimes be used instead of a Black Flag with Orange Spot which signifies that your kart is in a condition too dangerous to continue.
(i) CHEQUERED FLAG - Will only be shown at the finishing line - signifies the end of the race - stop racing - slow right down with your arm raised - no overtaking and drive your kart back to the pits. Once you pass the chequered flag your race is over - even if you are 1 or more laps behind the winner! YOU CANNOT CARRY ON RACING!
(j) ADVICE: Please listen calmly to the advice/warnings given to you by track/pit marshalls. You will be disqualified from the entire event if you abuse them verbally or physically.
(k) YOUR HAND SIGNALS ARE IMPORTANT! You should use hand signals to warn other drivers and track marshalls when:
(k.1) pulling off the circuit (a breakdown situation)
(k.2) enforced slowing down for any reason (both breakdown or danger)
(k.3) on your wind-down lap to signify that you are returning to the pits
(k.4) returning to the pits during a race
(k.5) to warn other drivers of danger ahead.
(k.6) The standard hand signal (as in the above) is not a limp wrist - it is an arm strongly raised so that the hand is clearly above the level of the top of your helmet.
DON’T MAKE YOUR HAND SIGNAL FOR JUST ONE OR TWO SECONDS - KEEP IT RAISED UNTIL YOU HAVE WARNED OTHER DRIVERS OF DANGER OR- IF YOU ARE LEAVING THE CIRCUIT- KEEP IT RAISED UNTIL YOUR KART IS ACTUALLY OFF THE RACING CIRCUIT.
(k.7) Acknowledge the track marshalls signals by  lifting a hand to let them know that you have seen ad are reacting to their signals.
(k.8) Wave at the track marshalls on your wind-down lap to thank them for their safety duties during your race!

(p) Covkartsport does not own the Circuits or the Fleets of Karts upon which its members race. _____________________________________________

You can be proud of your Championship! We hope that you value your place within it!

Covkartsport was founded in April 1996 and has run continuously since that date with ever-growing support and increasing success!

The reason for that success is that we have managed to provide a friendly but highly competitive and interesting Championship at very low cost compared to other forms of well-organised motorsport. It is a fact that Covkartsport offers the lowest cost outdoor multi-circuit Championship, of any motorsport description, anywhere in the United Kingdom!

Our general standard of motor racing skill is high - as proven by many of our drivers who have gone on to win in MSA National owner-driver championships.
- You have to be good to win at Covkartsport! Do well at Covkartsport and you will not disgrace yourself in any form of motorsport!

Several of our top drivers and ex-Champions choose to continue racing at Covkartsport as well as competing in high-standard MSA motorsport. This helps to maintain/raise our standards and gives our newer drivers a standard to which they can aim.

We care about providing an environment where most members can enjoy their kart racing and develop their skills on the track and friendships off the track. The reputation of Covkartsport is founded upon these two equally important pillars.

The Covkartsport Championship remains an absolutely UNIQUE concept in that it is the ONLY outdoor, sprint-race, multi-circuit, 4-stroke, hire-kart Championship in the United Kingdom!!!!!

___________________________________________

Everyone wants to win so, inevitably, it is impossible to keep everyone happy for all of the time. However, we do manage to keep most of our members happy for most of the time by a continual process of evolving the rules in accordance with the majority. This is proven by the large number of members who renew each year.

We have a team of intelligent professionals at the helm who are willing to donate considerable time, free of charge, to the organisation of Covkartsport: Nick and Barbara Stanley, Stuart and Donna Lindsay and Peter Realf work extremely hard, behind the scenes, in order to bring you such a successful Championship. They thank you and every one of our members for supporting Covkartsport and making the depth and strength of competition so good!

A rough guide to some of the main popular kart racing classes:
(there are many more than this)

These karts are “Direct-drive” karts - that is to say that they have just one forward gear with two foot pedals (gearbox classes on next page):

Comer Cadet -  Comer 60cc2-stroke - 7/8hp - 45mph max’ - age 8-12

Honda Cadet - Honda GX160cc4-stroke - 7/8hp - 45mph max’ - age 8-12

JICA (Junior 100) - All makes 100cc2-stroke - 20hp - 70mph max‘ - age 13-16

Formula A - All makes of fast 100cc2-stroke - 30hp - 85mph max’ - 16+

Indoor - Honda GX160cc 4-stroke - 5hp - 30mph max’ - All age groups

*Honda Twin-pro* - 2x Honda GX160cc4-stroke - 10hp - 60mph max’ - 12+

*Thunderkarts* - Honda GX390cc4-stroke - 15hp - 70mph max’ - 12+

Billand - 250cc4-stroke - 28hp - 80mph max’ - age 16+

F.Libre - Open grid for all Senior 100cc2-stroke karts - 15-30hp - age 16+

Junior TKM - Tal-Co100cc2-stroke(restricted) - 15hp - 70mph max’ - age 11-16

Senior TKM - Tal-Co100-115cc2-stroke - 18hp - 80mph max’ - age 16+

Rotax Max - 125cc2-stroke(restricted) - 20hp - 75mph max’ age 16+

These are the “Gearbox” Classes which have multi-speed sequential racing gearboxes and three foot pedals:

Junior Gearbox - TM85cc2-stroke - 6speed g/box - 20hp - 85mph max’

Europa - Motori-Bat 125cc2-stroke - 6speed g/box - 30hp - 100mph max’

F.125 - All makes 125cc2-stroke - 6speed g/box - 35-40hp - 120mph max’

F.210 National - Villiers 200cc2-stroke- 4speed g/box - 40-45hp - 130mph max’

F.250 National - Motocross 250cc2-stroke - 5speed g/box- 60-70hp - 160mph max’

F.250E - Twin cylinder 250cc2-stroke - 6speed g/box - 75-85hp - 190mph max’

*we use commercial variants of these two types in the Covkartsport Championship

Covkartsport is always pleased to help its members in giving advice on kart purchase, potential pitfalls and MSA racing.

Age restrictions for gearbox karts:
Junior Gearbox = 13-16
All 125cc classes and Formula 210 National = 16+
All 250cc classes = 17+

Gearbox karts are to all intents and purposes racing cars: 250cc gearbox karts hold the outright lap records at most of the major UK motor racing circuits! Yes that is correct - on most major British circuits 250E gearbox karts are lapping faster than World Superbikes and Formula 1 cars! On short circuits there is only usually a difference of about 3 seconds per minute covering all of the senior gearbox classes!

If you wish to purchase your own kart - take your time - some classes are VERY expensive to race! We can help to tell you about some of the pitfalls.
Covkartsport can offer advice and guidance covering:
1. Passing your ARKS test and obtaining your MSA Licence.
2. The type of kart suitable for you.
3. What you need to race.
3. Purchase and running costs.
4. Test drives before purchasing.
Please also consider how you are going to both store and transport the kart to the circuits, your own engineering expertise and the time and cost of maintaining the kart in good order.……………………....You are welcome to come to full MSA race meetings with us in order to see just what it is like and consider your options!
